Online auctions
Online auctions, much like traditional auction showrooms, allow 'buyers' to bid on a variety of items listed for sale by 'sellers'.
Most auction sites list both new and used goods. In addition to this some items are listed with a 'Buy it now' price.
Before buying something at online auction, follow some of the basic online shopping tips as listed in the Discount, savings and freebies section. Many of these are still relevant to getting the best deal.
Minimising online auction risks
Buyers are at particular risk when it comes to online auctions. Online auction sites have tried to minimise this risk, but in the end the buyers are placing their faith in the seller.
These are some basic online auction safety tips.
- Ensure a seller has a good amount of positive feedback. If a user has received little feedback, or a fair amount of negative feedback you can't be sure that they are reliable.
- Read the provided item description carefully. If you need more info contact the seller before bidding or buying.
- Be suspicious of deals that seem too good to be true - they quite possibly are.
- Paying by credit card or Paypal is generally the safest and quickest option. Never send cash or pay by money order.
- If an item is being brought from abroad be aware of the additional risks and considerations.
